Future of Food

Welcome to the Future of Food group, hosted at the website of Kootenay Food. The Future of Food was organized by the Future of Food Conference Collaborative. Having set up our group space on the Kootenay Food website, we wish to provide this portal as a point of access for information about The Future of Food, as well as a networking tool.

We look forward to having all the groups formed at the recent conference also taking advantage of the group networking features of this website.

Important Databases/West Kootenays

The West Kootenay "Farmland Database" is an online resource that provides a link for farmers looking for land and land owners looking for farmers. Farmers and landowners are listed by bio-regions within the West Kootenay. This online resource is updated as we are informed. If you are aware of missing information please contact us to update the database. The Farmland Directory was created by The Kaslo Food Security Project with funding from the Food Action Initiative. The Directory is available online at: www.nklcss.org

KLAS Local Food Calendar

Greetings all,

I would like to enlist your help in developing a “Calendar of Events” within the Kootenays. Basically what I am asking for are the following information:

Name of Event (Farmer’s market, Seedy Saturday/Sunday, Courses, Plant Sale etc etc.)
Date & Time of Event
Location
Cost (if any ie for vendors and consumers)
Organisers & Contact No.

I personally only know of a handful of events but I am sure there are plenty out there especially what with all the Seedy Saturdays/Sundays that will be upon us very soon!

Action: Act Now to SAve CAnadian Wheat Board

Please forward to your lists as soon as possible,
thanks!

Hello all,
I believe this is one of the most serious threats to canadian farmers and food sovereignty I have seen in my years of working on food systems. Prime Minister Harper is committed to destroying the Canadian Wheat Board, in opposition to the majority of the farmers it serves, and in the name of the illusion of a "free market" for the farmers.

AG.LAND COMMISSION Can't Do Its Job

FOOT-DRAGGING ON FARMLAND FIXES:AUDITOR

By Jeff Nagel - BC Local News
Published: October 05, 2011 10:00 AM
Updated: October 05, 2011 10:20 AM

Little to no action has been taken in the year since B.C.'s Auditor General red-flagged a series of big holes in the Agricultural Land Commission's ability to protect farmland.

Auditor General John Doyle's original report in the fall of 2010 contained nine recommendations, some of them urging the ALC to fix inaccurate maps of Agricultural Land Reserve boundaries and tighten enforcement against those who degrade farmland.

For Action:Agriculture Agenda By NDP Leadership Candidate

Hi Folks,

With regards to the Agriculture agenda which is apparently being championed by NDP leadership hopeful Mike Farnworth, may I suggest asking questions on his website (which specifically allows for this). The concern being that he not only support the re-institution of a meaningful Ministry of Ag. but that he specifically support small diverse local food production. This is the first time Ag. has been on a would-be leader's agenda since 1972!!!

REGIONAL AGRICULTURAL PLAN
Nelson on Nov 23rd from 7 - 9PM at the United Church basement Hall
The Regional District of Central Kootenay would like to encourage and protect farming and food security in our Region.
One of the ways this can be done is through the creation of an agricultural area plan, created with and by the residents of the RDCK.
We invite farmers, food producers and residents of the Region to join us in creating this plan to support viable farms and food for our area.
